In 1966, factory workers of the Golden Tobacco Company residing at Azad Nagar chawls in Andheri West formed the Azad Nagar Sarvajanik Utsav Samiti. Over six decades, the humble community celebration expanded into one of the most prominent pilgrimage centers in Mumbai, frequented by Bollywood superstars, politicians, and business magnates seeking wish fulfillment.
2. The 21-Day Sankashti Chaturthi Visarjan Mystery
While virtually all Ganpati mandals conclude their festivities on Anant Chaturdashi, Andhericha Raja remains installed for a full 21 days. Devotees who could not travel to South Mumbai during the congested 10-day period flock to Azad Nagar in the second and third weeks to experience peaceful, serene darshan. The grand immersion procession takes over 20 hours to reach Versova Beach on Sankashti Chaturthi.
3. Strict Temple Dress Code & Sanctum Rules
To maintain complete spiritual purity, the mandal enforces strict guidelines:
- Acceptable Attire: Kurta-pyjama, dhotis, sarees, salwar kameez, and full-length formal trousers and shirts.
