History
The history of Baga Beach mirrors the evolution of Goan tourism. Originally a serene fishing hamlet under Portuguese colonial rule, the area derived its name from the Baga River (Baga Creek), which empties into the Arabian Sea at the northern tip of the beach. For centuries, local fishermen used the calm river mouth to shelter their wooden canoes (catamarans) and dry fish nets.
In the late 1960s and 1970s, Baga was discovered by international hippies who set up camp along its quiet dunes, drawn by its untouched beauty and peaceful nature. In 1971, a British national named Tito Henry de Souza established a modest open-air bar named 'Tito's' near the beach. Over the decades, Tito's grew into an international nightlife brand, giving birth to the famous Tito's Lane and establishing Baga as Asia's premier party beach.
