Spanning over 34 square kilometres of open tropical grasslands and coastal saline mudflats, Velavadar is world-renowned for harbouring the world's largest population of Indian Blackbuck antelopes (over 4,000 individuals), the endangered Indian Wolf, striped hyenas, and the world’s largest roost of migratory Harrier birds.
About the Bhal Grassland Ecosystem
Formerly the royal private hunting preserve (*Vidi*) of the progressive Maharaja of Bhavnagar, Velavadar was notified as a National Park in 1976. The unique combination of short grasslands, thorny scrub, and intertidal coastal mudflats near the Gulf of Khambhat creates an ideal hunting habitat for top predators like the elusive Indian Wolf and golden jackal.
