Spiritual Significance & The First Tirthankara
For millions of Jain devotees worldwide, Shatrunjaya (meaning "Place of Victory over Inner Enemies") is the most sacred hill (*Siddhakshetra*). According to Jain scriptures, 23 of the 24 Tirthankaras (with the exception of Neminath) visited this holy hill to sanctify the earth. The first Jain Tirthankara, Bhagwan Rishabhdev (Adinath), attained spiritual enlightenment and delivered his first sermon on these peaks.
In 2014, Palitana made international history by becoming the world's first legally recognized vegetarian city, banning the slaughter of animals, sale of meat, and commercial butchery within its municipal boundaries to honour the principle of Ahimsa (absolute non-violence).
The Sacred Ascent: 3,500 Stone Steps
Reaching the temple complex atop the summit requires an invigorating spiritual trek of approximately 3,500 stone-carved steps spanning 3.5 kilometres from the base (*Gheti Pagathiya*). The climb takes 1.5 to 2.5 hours on foot. For senior citizens, differently-abled pilgrims, and children, traditional wooden palanquins carried by four porters (*Doli*) are readily available.
